Mexico – 2020-01-29

The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas have announced a partnership for the fourth edition of WAN-IFRA’s North American Digital Media Awards.

These awards “honor news publishers that have delivered unique and original digital media projects in the past year.” The awards ceremony will be held on April 23 in Austin, Texas, just before the official start of the Knight Center’s 21st International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), which runs from April 24-25.

“We are delighted to be strategic partners of WAN-IFRA’s North American Digital Media Awards, and it is an honor to have the ceremony hosted at the University of Texas at Austin campus on the eve of the traditional ISOJ conference,” said Professor Rosental Alves, founder and director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. “The two events are complementary and will benefit from this synergy,” he said.

In order to identify the challenges and opportunities of an ever-evolving news media landscape, WAN-IFRA invites the most groundbreaking and innovative digital media projects to enter the competition. The deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time February 28

These awards provide an excellent platform for media companies wishing to benchmark their digital products, business strategy, or storytelling innovations against the most competitive industry peers. Past winners in North America include The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Globe and Mail, NBC Universal, STAT, Alabama Media Group, Splinter, Los Angeles Times, Axios, Le Devoir, Guardian US, Vox Media, Quartz and La Presse, among others. Submissions will be evaluated by a diverse and international panel of experts

“Collaboration has always been at the heart of WAN-IFRA’s work. We’re strong believers that this strategic collaboration will provide unique value to digital-savvy journalists and news executives seeking to refine their skill set and strengthen their professional network,” said WAN-IFRA's CEO Vincent Peyrègne. “North American news media companies have always been at the forefront of innovation and digital transformation in our industry,” he continued.

The North American winners will qualify for the 2020 World Digital Media Awards competition, against projects from Africa, Asia, South Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. World Awards winners will be honored at WAN-IFRA’s World News Media Congress, in Zaragoza, Spain, on June 17-19. The Digital Media Awards competitions have become a reference in the global digital news publishing industry, attracting entries from the most prestigious news brands in the world.

WAN-IFRA aims to protect the rights of journalists and publishers around the world to operate independent media. It provides its members with expertise and services to innovate and prosper in a digital world and perform their crucial role in society.

ISOJ is a unique conference centered around the impact of the digital revolution on journalism. Bridging the gap between academia and the news industry, it is a program of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin.
